School Trip To Coleraine Co. Antrim

On Thursday 9th June 24 children and 5 adults from Scoil Mhuire, Marino, Dublin arrived at the Christie Memorial PS in Coleraine for a fun packed 2 days!  After a lovely BBQ tea both sets of children joined the rest of the school's children at the youth club.  Great fun was had by the children with playing in the play park to competing in a tug of war competition.
After youth club the children were divided into their groups and we had a quiz.  At 9.30pm when we adults thought the children would be ready for bed (wishful thinking!!!) we decided to go for a walk to Coleraine town centre and learn some interesting historical facts about the lovely town.  After arriving back to school the children got ready, sleeping bags in hand, to settle down for the night - this continued from 11.00pm until 2.00am in the morning!!
Following an alarm call at 7.00am (breakfast was at 7.30am although some children could be heard eating crisps at 5.00am!!!) the children were treated to a lovely breakfast that consisted of - cereal, sausage, bacon, toast, pancake and orange juice.
The children all took part in school assembly on the Friday morning where a child from each school was interviewed about the DB project and they both spoke positively about there experiences which was nice to hear!
As part of the link we had shared facts about out local area so where better to visit than Dunluce Castle and Giant's Causeway.  When we arrived at Dunluce Castle we an excellent 'free' tour of the castle when the children were told about ghosts and stories from the past.  An unexpected surprise was to follow as the University of Ulster and QUB were having an archaeological dig at the castle.  After speaking nicely to Colm Breen he agreed to let the children take part in the dig where they found some really exciting artefacts - they really enjoyed that nice surprise!!
When we left Dunluce Castle we headed for the 'Nook' restaurant at the Giant's Causeway for lunch.  Having agreed a great deal for us we thought it would be nice to get a sit down meal for the kids - they were very hungry at this stage!  After exchanging gifts with each other we set of for our walk to see the Giant's Causeway.  The children were amazed at the rock formations but most importantly it was nice to see them mix with their newly found friends from their visit.  All in all it was a fantastic DB encounter and I feel that if anyone decides to do a sleep over that it will make a huge difference to the relationships and friendships that the children make.
